Customer Reviews
Oh what joy to find soft herring roes again, I should have thought of searching on internet earlier. Absolutely delicious dipped in seasoned flour, fried and served on toast, bliss. Customer servioce really excellent too, perfect.
My 4th year with the smokehouse and as usual the fresh roes are delicious. Was a staple diet 70 years ago but with retailers disappearing from high streets over the decades difficult to find. The smokehouse is a gem of delights. The customer service is amazing they emailed to inform of stock arriving. Support these people who work so hard to please customers. When you want a really good meal this is where to order from, you will never be dissapointed.
I have tried for months to find somewhere to buy roe - at last I’ve found it and they actually emailed me to say it was in stock. Delivered to my home within two days. Thank you so much.
Glad I found the at Port Of Lancaster who were really helpful
Herring soft roe (the milt) isn't just delicious, it's fantastically nutritious too! And I could happily eat it every day. So I was delighted to find a source again after it stopped being sold more generally some years ago.
I've also been delighted to have been able to buy hard roe (the eggs), on request, as well! I really don't know why they're not as sought after as the soft roe, in this country anyway, when they're also absolutely delicious and wonderfully nutritious too! I think it can only be because people just aren't quite as familiar with them, but they're a real treat on toast, just tossed in seasoned flour and fried, with a sprinkle of vinegar. Years ago, I'd have had both hard and soft roe with lots of butter, but it's olive oil these days. Still yum!
